Robert,

I am not totally sure what you are asking.  If you are wanting to  
leave the lid closed on the laptop and still use the external monitor  
as your only monitor then hook the external monitor to the laptop  
with the lid closed, this will then make the external the only  
monitor and all should work fine.

If you are asking how to close the lid after the external monitor is  
hooked to the laptop and the lid was open when you make the  
connections, then I have no idea and will be interested in the reply  
from someone much more knowledgeable than I.
