Does your camera have a menu where you can select how it should  
operate when it is plugged in?  My Photosmart has an option where it  
can either operate as a flash drive (for accessibility in the Finder)  
or just as a digital camera (just for iPhoto to open it).

If not, do you have a USB SD card reader?  That may be a work around  
for your problem.  :)
