Does anyone know or can anyone point me to an explanation of how OS X decides when to update a folder's modified date?
One would think that if files inside a folder were modified that the folder's modified date would automatically change to the date/time of the latest modified file, but that does not (always) seem to be the case. Example: I have an external HD called "Backup," within which are folders for various people to use as backup locations, e.g. "Dan's Backup Folder," "Bill's Backup Folder," etc. Every night at a specified time a program (ChronoSync) automatically backs up any changed files to that user's folder. However, if I look at the folders' dates to determine the last time they were modified, the date that appears is not necessarily the same as the latest modified file in that folder. "Dan's Backup Folder" may show a modified date of Feb. 15, but a folder or file within that folder may show a modified date of Feb. 20. Other folders seem to update their modified dates immediately; I can't find any consistency to how it works. Lastly, is there any way to force the system to update those modified dates?
