I recently downloaded a couple of movie files that are .mp4 type.
These will not play with any of the standard video players I have,

 QuickTime Player

 Windows Media Player

What will I need to play these on my system? I'm currently using
version sys10.4.11, on a Mac Mini from a LaCie FW external.

Like QuickTime, MPEG-4 is a container not a codec. There are many different codecs designed to work with MPEG-4 (H-264, DivX, 3ivX, XviD, ... ) and a few of them do not exist on the Mac. I've run across Microsoft MPEG-4 version 3 files quite often, and I don't think they can be played on a Mac. Usually the Inspector menu item in QuickTime player will give you a clue or two about the codec.
