First of all, download the Perian QuickTime component [1]. Even if it can't play the video, it's pretty smart about identifying them.

To identify codecs, I've used some tools under Linux called MPEG4IP. There is a Mac port available [2], but I've not used it. In particular, the MPEG4VOL tool may give you more information than you want.
