Why?

Here's some facts:

The iPhone is GSM and likely always will be as it is the most common
mobile technology in the world. Sprint and Verizon are using CDMA,
which is incompatible with GSM. That leaves the much smaller (in the
US) T-Mobile as your ONLY alternative to AT&T.

Now, the much-vaunted 3G that you have been hearing about is just a
general reference to the next-generation of data networks that the
cell companies are rolling out. That's yet ANOTHER bowl of alphabet
soup, but the bottom line is that recent tests have shown that the 3G
version implemented by AT&T is FASTER than that used by Sprint,
Verizon AND T-Mobile--in some cases as much as TWICE as fast.

So, maybe AT&T is not the greatest company (and I know for a fact that
they are horrible to at least some of their employees) but they are
the PERFECT choice for Apple to partner with.

My personal experience with them has been fine. Our whole family is
with them. We have two iPhones. And I have found EDGE in some places
to be VERY speedy for my needs, the cost is right in line with what I
expect, and I have never had any customer service nightmares. So, I am
happy with my little corner of AT&T.

And Ed's right: 4 more years.
