I have a G5 that is nearly three years old. It's running leopard, and
I recently had the power supply replaced because of problems I
reported not too long ago on the list. Since getting the new power
supply (just a few weeks before our warranty expires) the computer
generally has run well, except for a crash when my wife was playing
scrabble on it that was scary, producing what I feared was the blue
screen of death after she turned the computer off while it was frozen.
It did eventually restart and after taking an unusually long time, it
ran repair permissions and verify disk. My questions for the wisdom of
macgroup: does a G5 have something like the CMOS batteries my iMac G3s
had that might need replacing? I ask because the computer doesn't seem
to remember the display brightness I have it set for after restart--
something that I believe was an early symptom of a CMOS battery dying.
Also, I have been running a Western Digital 500 gigabyte hard drive as
a backup drive with time machine. It seems to me the computer heats up
more when the Western Digital drive is connected. Should I worry about
that? Thanks for any guidance--Ben Zion Hershberg

ps: Is there an annual membership fee for the list? I believe I paid
something years ago when I registered but haven't for a long time
since, and I've been feeling guilty about getting so much good help
from the list and providing nothing in return but dumb questions.
