If you are getting excessive heat from plugging in an external drive something is wrong. Could this be a water cooled G5? Having to replace the PMU suggest the possibility of other damage done by cooling system leaks. If at all possible, extend the Apple Care.

On my previous G5, i ran 24/7/365: (5) internal HD's, (1) FW 800 750Gb, and had USB and FW hubs full of active devices. Yes it got hot, and the fans ran when I was crunching Gb's size files, but (allegedly) that's Apples definition of a Pro computer and I used it as such. I did have the front grille parked by an AC outlet, and had plenty of air space to the rear, which made a 'significant' difference. best...jf

My back up drive is external and is connected via a USB port. Isn't
the extra heat it generates a risk to the logic board and other vitals
of my G5? I've taken to only connecting the external drive for a short

the purpose of time machine and I'm afraid also creates wear and tear
on my soon to be warranty-less computer--Ben Zion
