Oh boy, this is a tough one. If you want to program for the Web then PHP or Perl would be a good choice. There are many good books on how to use these. Another choice for the web would be Java Script (not Java) as well as AJAX.
If he wants to learn languages for use in most businesses today I would recommend C#, Visual Basic .NET or Java. These are more difficult to learn but are widely used in the current business environment. The company I work for, a home health care software company, uses C#, Visual Basic, Delphi (an older language which we are getting away from). Hope this helps.
