I just did the conversion to the iPhone (not the iPod) and that conversion was MUCH quicker, guessing around 30 min. while the mp4 was two to three times that long. I also think the clarity on the screen is much better. I had recorded this movie at almost full screen on a 24" monitor so compressing for a small iPhone or iTouch screen really makes it difficult to watch since much of the movie is spreadsheet work so we are looking at individual cells. A "real" movie would be much better than what I was using.

Also, if you have this in iTunes for the iPhone or iPod then trying to watch it from within iTunes you will find the content too blurry for the bigger screen. If you wanted to have a version of the file inside iTunes you would need to rename it and import as a full movie and not compressed for the iPod or iPhone/iTouch.

Greg,

I'll give that a try and see the difference between the two and let you know.

I notice in Quicktime that you can also export the file to an option titled “Movie to iPod.” Anybody know the difference in exporting it as a ”Movie to Mpg-4” versus “Movie to iPod?” I guess the iPod can play either.

Greg,

I wanted to give this a REAL test so I took a Quicktime movie that was 450 meg that I had just recorded from the internet using SnapZPro. I opened the movie in QuickTime, then Exported it to my desktop as an mp4. Due to the size this took a long time but once done I then imported it into iTunes and I then docked my iTouch and went into the movie files and there it was. I clicked on it and am listening and watching it as I type this so indeed Quicktime is all you need to get a movie to work with iPod, iTouch or iPhone.

Greg,

I wasn't using Handbrake, I opened the file in QUICKTIME and from there did the Export to mp4 That file is then put into an email or iTunes. I have done this before for I kept sending video's in some of my Daddy Mac newsletters and one of the guys ask why he couldn't view the video on his iPhone, so I did the checking and discovered what I was doing wrong (not converting to mp4. I did this routine, emailed one to myself and could view the video on the iPhone.

Thanks John. I did try that without any luck. I had saved the file to my desktop, opened Handbrake and Handbrake would not recognize the file. I tried it in .avi, .dv and .mov format. I played with the file in every way I could think of with no luck. BUT I think I found the answer – at least one way to skin the cat. I reopened the original file in iMovie and there is an option to save the file in iPod format (see the Share menu). That saved the file an it works like a champ. That’s fine but what if I do not have the original movie file? If someone sends me a QT file, what do I do? I don’t have an answer for this one.

You may need a program called Handbrake to convert it over to be played on Touch.....

Hi all,
Just put together a short clip of home movies. Used iMovie and saved a file in Quicktime format. I want to have the file on my iPod Touch to view (and show off the kids). I drag the Quicktime file over the iTunes icon and it is loaded in the movie section of iTunes. I select that movie to be synced with my iPod Touch. However, when syncing, I get the message that the file was not synced with the iPod Touch "because it cannot be played on this
 iPod."
You've got to be kidding me. An iPod Touch cannot play a QT file?
There's got to be a way. Anybody have any suggestions?

 Thanks,

 Greg
