Mike, I have NO idea for it has never happened to me, but you might try "Rebuilding" the mailbox????? Highlight the mailbox you want and go under the mailbox header and the bottom choice is to "Rebuild".
I am sure once the guys that really know see this they will suggest a way to make it work. Do you use TimeMachine? If so go back two days and restore the mail from there and see if it will continue to work in the future.
