Isn't this something that Snow Leopard is supposed to fix? (telling
you what program is using the files)

Well there are no applications using the photos on the disk. I tried
relaunching the finder but that didn't work.
Go into the dreaded terminal and type the command lsof. This will
give you a list of all files opened by all processes. You can see
the program the Finder thinks is using something from the volume.
The process name is on the far left and the file it's using is on
the far right.
