As you're probably aware, when you delete mail from your Inbox, it
goes into Mail's Trash folder and stays there for as long as you have
it set to do so in your Mail preferences. (In Mail's preferences,
under Accounts/Mailbox Behaviors, you can set a couple of options for
your Trash folder, including how long it waits to actually delete the
mail in the Trash folder. I have mine set to one day, but many people
set that to a week or longer, just to give them a longer time to
retrieve a mistakenly deleted email). The actual folder that contains
those "deleted-but-not-really" emails can be found at ....username/
Library/Mail/Mailboxes/Deleted Messages.mbox/Messages.
You can also manually delete them from the Trash folder at any time by
selecting them and clicking on the "Delete" icon.
When they're deleted from the Trash folder, they're really deleted —
which is to say their directory marker is wiped out so that the system
can overwrite the space on the disk that those file occupy. The
actually data that comprises the email file may well still exist for a
while and could be recovered with a special file recovery program, but
for all intents and purposes, once it's deleted from Mail's Trash
folder, it's gone just like any other file in the main system's trash
can once it's "emptied."

I have my mail set to go into trash when I delete it . ( my computer
isn't always faithful and stuff ends up in other delete folders),
but that is a topic for another time.
What happens, though, when i delete items from the trash? Where do
they go? They just don't disintegrate, do they? I guess for that to
happen i would have to click 'cut' or 'delete forever' it it were
available.
But then, where do all these thousands of messages I have deleted
from the trash in the course of time, where do they live on?
