I could also tell stories of California, fresh from Germany up
there in Richmond, where there were no sidewalks and when I walked

people without cars, so I had to ask for a lift, yes, and I asked
for a recipe when I was trying to get a prescription , but in travel
I never got farther down than Monterey. And these strange entrance
tests at the university there at Berkeley! Well, the essay was fine,
but the multiple choice! I was taught at home to give reasons, so I
added a long explanation to every answer I gave on an extra sheet
and told my reasons for choosing that particular one. Good that
technology had not advanced much and the tests were read by real
people, and my contribution was found amusing.
Yes, those were the days.
You are likely glad you left CA before the bay area turned into a
maelstrom of mania in the 60s. There was a reason they called it
Berzerkley. I love most of California, but there are armpits, er, ah,
pockets of the state that I am less enamored with.
But to go back to AT&T, they had come by the house here and cut a
bunch of my trees to their delight, they manicured them down into
the quick.Never an apology, never anybody to tell me why they did
it, and when finally I came with a broom to sweep and clear the side
walk, they took off in their truck ,leaving only a mauled tree
behind, no paper, no telephone, nichts. That has been my "personal"
encounter with AT&T . So -= I am a bit - anxious-
Are you sure it was AT&T and not LG&E? LG&E is usually the one that is
more aggressive with the trees--with good reason, recent experience
shows. Yes, they have the legal right to maul trees to their heart's
content if it's near one of their lines. Sad, but the alternative is
higher costs and more outages. Or, so they say.
