My experience is mixed.  Sometimes they have the product in store while the 
announcements are made and they start selling them that day.  But mostly you 
would have to pre-order it or wait in line a few days to a few weeks later.

As far as pre-orders: I've always got them on the release date if I ordered 
them to be delivered then.  I've never waited in line at the store. I hate 
lines and crowds.  Something left over from living in Europe.
