Harry, the iPad's hugemongous battery requires a bit of current to charge it. 
Most laptops don't have that much to spare at their USB ports, so you have to 
plug it into the wall with the oversized white brick they supply. You can sync 
it with the computer fine, but it won't charge. Some have said that it will 
charge if the iPad is off and, though I haven't tested that, it makes sense 
that having it on AND charging would take more power than just charging.

I have heard that SOME laptops will charge it and some won't. It all depends on 
how much juice is at the USB port you plug it into.
