Anne,

I am on version 10.1.4, OSX 10.6.5 I have never encountered what you are
describing, to play or stop you click on the play arrow in the upper left
corner of iTunes, click the arrow to stop, or use the spacebar to stop and
start. I quite iTunes in the middle of a song and reopened without it resuming
the song.

You have written about a few things being wacky recently, if I had these things
happening I would rebuild the directory with DiskWarrior. Anytime I start
getting nutty things going on doing the DiskWarrior dance stops it cold. Maybe
I have just been lucky.
