I take another route, since there is little that I want encrypted: I make sparsebundles using Disk Utility for things like financial stuff and work stuff (my laptop is for work and home). They grow only as needed, and can be compacted in the Terminal pretty easily. (hdiutil compact yourbundle.sparsebundle) @Lee: isn't this what FileVault is doing now, so that only some of chunks get updated when files change?
