The Android has some fantastic sales numbers, blowing the doors off every other vendor. Yesterday I discovered why.
First, the way the game is played. My daughter's Verizon phone had yet another dead battery but her contract wasn't up until Sept. She had been on line several times and it continued to say Sept. She had gone to the Verizon store she normally uses on Charlestown Rd in New Albany. Same story, Sept., but she needed a battery now and they aren't cheap and to then have to upgrade in Sept was not the best way to spend her money. So last night I went with her to the main Verizon store here in Southern Indiana, which is in Clarksville. We talked to two people once inside, each getting on their system and saying it would be Sept. before she could upgrade. We looked around at the various phones then a third person came up, a "specialist" of some sort. She ask if she could help, we said no that she couldn't upgrade until Sept., whereupon I said that was fine we would just change to AT&T if that was going to be their policy. She said, follow me....... We went to the back of the store where she looked up the info and said it was Sept., BUT she would do it now. Hmmmmm, I wonder if the thought of her going to AT&T might have brought a change of heart? Now the reason for the Android success. She took us to the Android display, even though I mentioned that we were Mac people and would consider the iPhone. Not a comment but went into the Android pitch. We looked and before I even reached the display I could tell there was no comparison in the appeal of the Android. She went through her routine and touted all the benefits of the Android over the iPhone......and the only one that she focused on was the ability to go to your recent calls and delete an individual call rather than the iPhone needing to delete all the recents. I said, "thats it"? She didn't have another thing to offer. OTHER than the Android was FREE.......let me say again......FREE while the iPhone was $199.00 with the 2 yr. contract. Can you believe this? Android is BUYING the market for no matter how good the iPhone most people will not pay a couple hundred when they can get the marvelous Android for nothing. Also, the sales folks ignore the iPhone but you know.......after I spent about 15 minutes with her she became very quiet, all the while my daughter laughing that I was telling her one reason after another why there is no comparison between the two units. By the time we got to the register to purchase the iPhone ......yes PURCHASE.....she leaned over & quietly whispered to me that she would like to go to work for Apple. I told her that would be great but she couldn't since she didn't have any tattoos, where she then pulled up her sleeve and showed us her tat. It's hard for Apple to compete with Free in this economy, I think they hold their own when there is a comparable price so as you see the numbers it is a little easier to understand why.....remember when Microsoft gave away so many of their goodies? It put AOL & Netscape in the trash can, along with Lotus 123 and several databases. It's a system of marketing that works if you have deep pockets, which Google sure does. John
