This has little to do with SMTP servers; it's stupidity in Apple's mail program. It seems that no matter what the problem is with logging into a mail server, Apple's mail.app wants you to enter your password. The program has little facility for detecting other problems such as timeouts because a server is busy or network hiccups. Every error brings up a password dialog. If you check the logs, you'll see there was likely some other unrelated error.
