I currently have iPhoto 09 on my Mac BookPro, with the iPhoto pictures on an external HD. This has been working fine allowing my MBP to have more breathing room. I have delayed updating to the new iPhoto 11 (iLife-11), because I have been confused about how it the update would happen. I guess the 'program' still resides on my MBP, so when I update it, the software on the MBP gets the change, and my library of photos is not involved. Am I right about that? Anything I need to be change first? Or be aware of?
