Once you update to iPhoto 11 it may find the file due to files from iPhoto 09, if not you can direct it to you external drive. Once found and after your first launch if there are any conversions the program will do it automatically and you will not notice any difference when you view your photo's. It is seamless and so stress free.......at least that has been my experience. I use Aperture and it's the same but when I used iPhoto the conversions were very simple. If you use TimeMachine you will still have a backup of your old iPhoto library should something go bump.
