Nora, I have seen the behavior you describe fixed many times by simply 
replacing the router. If it's the DSL modem then your ISP will replace it. They 
can dial into it to tell if it's working correctly. If it is, then it's your 
router. 

You can get cheap N routers for less than $50 these days that may or may not be 
a worth-while investment. Problem is that spending $150 on a fancy N router is 
no guarantee that it will work any better. More likely, but not a sure thing. 
Best option: buy cheap and make sure the seller has a liberal (lower-case el) 
return policy. Then if it's not satisfactory, you can return it and buy the 
next model up. 

I have seen expensive ones fail and cheap ones last a long time. YMMV.

Oh, and the speed improvement with any N router over a B or G is dramatic. 
You'll be glad you did.
