I have not used the card again, so maybe Image Rescue will work.

I have looked for both the new photos, albums I created, and the other library, 
to no avail.  I thought Spotlight would find anything that was there.  I can't 
imagine how I could have edited those photos and put them in albums, only to 
not find a single one now.

It may be related to the fact that I used the Aperture trial for a month before 
purchasing the application.  I mostly used my macbook pro for that since I 
could take it easily to the Apple store.  When I purchased the application and 
started adding more photos, I had two somethings, maybe libraries, that the 
apple folk had to merge into one.  That was easy enough to do with the smaller 
computer that I could take to the store.  But on this iMac I can't even find 
anything to merge.

Thank for the Image Rescue suggestion.  It's worth a try.
