Last weekend, they turned off the power to most of the Belknap campus at UofL, so the machine called erdos serving this list was shut down. When erdos automatically rebooted after power was restored, the routers serving it DHCP information weren't quite back online, so the DNS information wasn't all there. This confused the mailman software for the list, and mailman held onto messages in its queue instead of sending them out. I figured all this out earlier today. That's why you had the flood of older messages this morning.
