I think pin 19 was plugged on most ATA cables for all types of machines to keep 
you from plugging it in backwards.

Been quite a while since I put an ATA/IDE drive into a Mac, but the only 
difference I remember is that some of the older machines didn't recognize the 
"cable select" mode, so you have to actually set the jumpers on the drive for 
master or slave mode. If the ribbon you're using is set up for CSEL, there is a 
pin shorted to ground that isn't grounded on a non CSEL cable.

A CSEL cable can usually be used with master/slave jumpers. On really old 
machines, there was a problem with the drive always being seen as a slave 
unless the grounded hole was disconnected. (I think it's pin 28, but you'd 
better do some Googling before you take out the wire cutters.)
