That should not be the reason it uploads slowly. I have found that the FTP programs in Web creation tools are always bad and troublesome. I use Dreamweaver and people complain all the time about the same issues you are complaining about slowness.
Transmit is done in seconds all the time. I update webpages daily and hate waiting for uploads.
