I had no problem earlier this year doing just that. When I first got the new 
computer it had Mountain Lion on it and I used Migration Assistant to move 
everything over from the old iMac. It's true that some of the applications 
wouldn't work under ML but it gave me  list of those and I either had to 
upgrade or delete them. I still have Photoshop CS2 on the new iMac just to 
remind me that I no longer have it to use. It's in the Dock but has a circle 
with a line through it. I won't be upgrading that one because of the cost. Not 
worth it too me.
