Anne, Don't know why Time Machine is not working, but I use an external drive to backup 2 laptops and a desktop computer from time to time and depending on which computer I am on and which backup I am trying to access, I receive the message about not having permissions to read files from the various backups. Haven't really had time to investigate why, however I have been able to work around accessing the files by changing the permissions on either the entire backup or the particular folder I'm trying to access at the time. I don't know if that would affect anything if I ever tried to restore from one of those backups but at least I can get to my files. I generally use Terminal and the Chmod command to change the permissions. Maybe that will help you access the files on your backup?…
