I had done all that Lee and others suggested.

Finally called Apple and after a 50 minute 20 second phone connection with less
than a minute of wait time (!) the problem is solved.

The Apple operator who helped me was excellent. She directed me in an orderly
manner to click on, scroll down, delete this or that, now go up to and so on.
After she had me "clean out all she could think of she had me download a free
program called Malwarebytes Anti-Malware.app (formerly AdWareMedic.com) and
run that. It found two more "hidden" files. And now all seems to work.

Apple Care is wonderful!!! Anyone who buys an Apple product for which there is
AppleCare should buy it. Within the last two months I have gotten a new hard
drive installed and much technical support with an external HD backup and now
this. FREE.
