When my grandson graduated from high school in 2013 I purchased a new MacBook for him, along with several accessories, one of them being an external drive to backup his work using TimeMachine.
Like many teens, he didn’t pay a bit of attention and the drive was never backed up AND in all these years the Directory was never rebuilt… Now the thing is SO bad when I ran the latest DiskWarrior, going into the Terminal, and letting DiskWarrior do it’s thing from the root I finally get a message that the directory is SO DAMAGED it can’t be rebuilt and this may have caused mechanical damage. First, EVERYONE needs to rebuild the Directory once in awhile, less frequently on Mac’s with little usage, but a college student with all their continual work needs to do this often… Second, do you think if I reformat the drive all will be O.K.? I don’t have a good backup since he never did this either but at least I would be back in business and we could see if any of the items are retrievable off TimeMachine. Instead of doing this do you think Apple would have tools that would be more powerful than DiskWarrior and it would be best to take this to them? Thanks for your suggestions.
