You could try another directory fixer such as TechTool or Drive Genius. They 
might be better with the particular problems on that drive. I assume you’ve 
tried Apple’s Disk Utility. There’s always Data Rescue that doesn’t mess with 
directories, but searches the whole drive to find files.

I never rebuild my directories and haven’t had problems. On laptops, I try not 
to close the lid while files are being written and I wait for the power light 
to start “breathing” before I move the machine.

If the drive’s SMART status is good and it passes a surface scan by something 
like TechTool, it seems to me reformatting it ought to work.

Could be worth a try. They may have better software to take advantage of the 
journal file.

Of course, you should keep in mind their primary mission is to sell you a new 
drive or even a new machine. I’ve replaced hard drives for many people who’ve 
been told by Apple their original drive was bricked. They’ve often given me the 
“bad” drive. I've then used the “bad” drive for years afterward with no 
problems.
