Lee,
Thanks for the reply. This message shows up frequently, and I never know
whether to choose allow or don't allow.
I guess my confusion is allowing network connections at all. I'm not
sure which network it refers to, but I'm assuming it means my own
network, which would include my applications and my other computers -
not connections outside my own network - and I've been assuming it would
be okay to say "allow."
Is this right?
Thanks for your patience with my confusion, Lee. I know others have been
wrestling with this question as well.

allow don't allow
What is the correct answer?
This is a message from macOS firewall. It’s wanting to verify the checksum of the
program’s binary code. Almost all Mac programs have such a checksum. The default is to do
it automatically. Check System Preferences>Security & Privacy>Firewall Options
has the thing flagged correctly.
If this message shows up after launching a program from a well-known developer,
it probably means you either have the setting wrong in the preferences, or the
binary has been damaged.
