1. El Capitan will run with 2GB. As per his current experience, he may not want 
to have several apps open at the same time.

2. I have one.

3. If he upgrades in place, yes he will not lose any data.

Another approach is to copy all of his files off, reformat the drive, install 
El Cap and copy everything back to the correct folders. 

Either way he will have to review what apps he normally uses and either get 
upgrades for them or accept that he will not be able to use them any more. Some 
apps may work, but that’s a little iffy. All the Apple apps have new versions 
that work fine on El Cap.
