Chris, If indeed the machine will run Sierra then go with it. Much quicker than El Capitan, more features, as far as bugs I don’t know of any, Apple has sent a few patches as they are discovered but a current download would have all the corrections included.
You will have some of your Applications that won’t work as Sierra is fully 64 bit, (as is El Capitan) Mavericks is 64 but used Rosetta to emulate 32 bit applications so both 64 and 32 would run, now only 64 bit applications will run, so newer versions will need to be updated….some may have not been written for 64 bit and are gone. I had to keep one machine with Mavericks on it just so I could run Quicken, finally Intuit upgraded Quicken to 64 bit and I could eliminate the older operating system...
