Hi all,

I just ordered a refurb 2017 Macbook for my wife to replace her 2006(!)
Macbook, which is starting(?) to feel slow. Of course, the 2017 Macbook comes
with one and only one USB-C port.

From what I can see [1], it seems that all that would be needed would be
something with some USB-A ports, perhaps an SD reader, and perhaps an HDMI
port, and perhaps a pass-thru to allow charging and working at the same time.

I didn't buy the $70 adapter from Apple, because I figured I would find
something similar/better elsewhere for cheaper/way cheaper, but I have gotten
stumped by the choices.

I've seen that macsales has a super-fancy hub for $300(!), which is a bit over
the top.

There are other clip-to-the-side style ports, but they are likely designed for
the thickness of a MacBook Pro, not the thinness of the Macbook.

Finally, when I read reviews, there are plenty cheap alternatives, but some
sound like they are cheap and not just inexpensive.

Does anyone have a hub that they can recommend?

Thanks,

Bill
[1] Here are the basic needs and what I think is supposed to work:

  1. Take photos off her camera (need female USB-A type), or better
  2. Take photos directly off her SD card (some hubs have this)
  3. Take photos off her iPhone 6 (again, need female USB-A type port)
  4. Back her computer up to what have always been Firewire enclosures, but
which also have USB 3.0/3.1 connectors. (need either male USB-B or female USB-B
with another cable male-to-male USB-B or female USB-A with
male-USB-A-to-male-USB-B)
  5. Hook the computer up to the TV via HDMI (so something to female HDMI)
  6. Make it faster to get stuff from her old computer to her new computer
without waiting for days for ancient wireless protocols. I'm guessing this must
be done via putting an image on a hard drive, because the old computer has only
USB 2 (the definition of slow) and Firewire 400.
  7. In the best of all worlds, be able to charge the computer and connect it
at the same time.
