Routers are being updated all the time, so any recommendation would be dated before it came out. I’d do a Net search for reviews and comparisons. That being said, I set up a Synology RT2600ac for someone a few weeks ago and was pretty impressed with it. At home I’m running a Netgear Nighthawk AC3200, which was highly rated a couple of years ago when I bought it. All the better Netgear routers support at least inbound OpenVPN. I can’t really say much about the VPN support in the AC3200 because I installed the open source DD-WRT firmware on it instead of the stock Netgear firmware. DD-WRT adds more features to your router than you would ever want, at the price of a bit of inscrutability. I never use the router to connect to outgoing VPN. I connect individual machines as I need to, and that isn’t very often done at home. I have the router set up to accept inbound VPN so I can connect to my home network from anywhere.
