Most of these services (DropBox, iCloud, Google, Box, …) create a folder on your hard drive that they keep synced with a cloud copy. They locally appear instantaneous because you’re only seeing changes to the local folder. The service uploads and downloads changes to the cloud copy in the background. It’s interesting to watch this happen. If you have two computers connected to DropBox or iCloud, make changes on one of them and see how long it takes to migrate the changes to the other. Both iCloud and DropBox are really quick with small files. Google not so much.
