See if they have a live image you can download. (Both Ubuntu and Fedora have 
them.) Put it on an external hard drive or flash and see if it boots. You can 
try Linux without a lot of pain. If the live image works, you’ll likely have 
few problems installing it. Since all these operating systems are free, you can 
try different distributions until you find one you like.

That being said, I run Catalina on three different Macs (2014 mini, 2018 mini, 
2016 MacBook Pro) and my wife runs it on one (2019 MacBook). We don’t have any 
deal-breaking problems. Some software was slow to update for Catalina, but that 
problem has gone away for me as the developers squashed problems.  Before you 
upgrade, make sure your software is up to date and beware any older 32-bit 
software because it won’t work at all.

PS/ Another thing I do before a major upgrade is to make a clone image of the 
pre-upgrade hard drive so I can back out of the changes by restoring the 
original.
