Ok, I think I may have over thought what I wanted to do.
The goal: Add some extra I\O pins for a simple control panel.....to get away from the keyboard. Now that I've thought about it, would using 2 MCP2017 (I2C i\o expanders) and using the supplied user component get me to where I want to be without going the whole USB route on the BBB ?
