I could not get the machinekit image to work for me either. I went back and followed the directions located at https://machinekoder.com/machinekit-debian-stretch-beaglebone-black/ This process worked for me. I fought the machinekit image for 2 days before giving up and going through the entire process step by step. Even then I had issues getting the examples to run.
