Nah, it's not you, it's a bad operating system.
Windows98 is simply enhancements to Windows95,
which is an 8 year old operating system. Since
then, there have been a few operating systems out
of Redmond that actually approach stability. I
know it sounds like a lot, but if you can get your
hands on Windows2000 professional, you will be
signficantly happier. It is WAY more stable, and
has all of the feature/functionality of Windows98,
and more.
I recently reverted back to Windows98 after several
years away, simply to create a gaming machine. I
was so disgusted by the instability of the OS (on a
brand name PC where I KNOW everything works), that
I abandoned the whole effort.
Don't go near WindowsME, and stay away from
WindowsXP. Windows2000, however, (and I hate to
say this), I really like. It's fast, powerful, and
most of all, STABLE. I can't recall ever receiving
the BSOD with Win2k. (blue screen of death, that
is).
Don, do you have high speed Internet?

to keep by burning it onto a cd. Then I'll re
install that later.
