I have heard of this done, and considered trying this myself. You should be
able to do it.
One of the things to watch out for is adding noise to the wire. It shouldn't
impact things much, but adding signal to an otherwise unused pair of wires,
and adding connections to that pair elsewhere throughout the house could
impair the regular telephone line or the PhoneNet or both. Maybe not too
likely, but some phones come with only 2 wire phone cords (middle pair) and
it's probably a strategy to reduce noise.
Ever try hooking up a PhoneNet connection with one of those 2 wire cords? I
hate when that happens. Thankfully it's not so often anymore.
I am not sure how you would have to terminate such a set up. Clark Martin
had some comments about it a few days back. I've got an old Mac Networking
book that I can look at. If I find anything specific I'll report it back.
Has anyone had any luck using HPNA devices? From what I understand, you get
Ethernet speeds over the regular phone lines without rewiring. Everything
needs an Ethernet card in this case though.
