If you've got an extra transceiver around, give that a try. I've seen some
where you got a link light, but you don't pass any traffic.
Also, if you've got a serial cable around and you have any doubt about the
file sharing setup, try connecting them with serial. That will confirm that
your software is configured properly, and would narrow it down to something
with Ethernet.
Just a thought.
As far as the auto-negotiation thing goes, you'd often see that the link
light would flash constantly. This is not likely to happen with an 8500 or
7100 AAUI. I really only saw this with some older NuBus cards in some
Performa 580/Performa 5200's.
