I hope you guys can help me out.

I have a 10 gig IDE hard drive, actually it's the hard drive that originally
came with my G4. (Yes, this is also the one that was for sale on LEMSwap,
but the person who wanted it recanted, and I decided to keep it.)

I remember back when I got my G4, there were a lot of problems with the IDE
drive and my 4 gig SCSI drive (which is the computer's only hard disk now)
being in there together. Don't remember specifics, but basically just that
whenever the 10 gigger was in there, the computer would crash.

Well, I decided to give it another try, seeing as how my 4 gig drive is
almost full, and I plan to buy OS X soon.

I installed the IDE drive and the computer booted fine from the SCSI drive.
(Oddly, it would freeze if I tried to boot from the OS 9 CD.) Drive Setup
could see the IDE drive, named <not initialized>. First I tested it for bad
blocks, and Drive Setup found none. So I tried to initialize the drive.
Almost immediately I get the message, "Initialization failed." I tried this
with "Zero All Data" checked and got the same message. Odder still, the
option for low level format was grayed out.

I removed the IDE drive and stuck it in an old 60mhz Pentium I have laying
around. BIOS refused to see it. All possible jumper settings have been
tried. It is a Quantum Fireball CX with Apple logo.

Is all hope for this disk lost? What else can I do, if anything? I would
love to be able to use it if at all possible, instead of having to buy a new
drive.

How does all this relate to networking, you may ask? Wellllll... that hard
drive will be running IPNetRouter, linking my localtalk Macs to the ethernet
side of the network. :) (I plan to pass the SCSI drive on to someone else.)

If you think this is off-topic, please email me off-list if you have any
ideas. Thanks, everyone.
