If you have multiple computers to get on the 'Net, do yourself a 
favor and buy a hardware router.  I use the SMC Barricade 7004ABR, 
which can definitely be configured to share a dial-up modem 
connection.  (You have to attach a serial port modem, no USB.)  Be 
sure the router has good Mac support, especially that it can be 
configured via a web browser and that you can update the firmware 
from your computer.  Some routers use Windows-only apps to update the 
firmware.  SMC is platform-independent.  Information on the Barricade

BTW, I managed to snag my Barricade for $40 from Amazon.com using
