>From what I know: 1) Yes ;) 2) Just did that last week, although I didn't have a choice. The place I went to had at least 5 other people with similarly aged iMacs (~2yrs) have HD failures. Everyone, quick, run and back up your data! 3) No experience with Dazzle, if you don't need full screen, this should work: http://eshop.macsales.com/Item_Specials.cfm?ID=2747&Item=XLRUSB-XIVNQ and is very cheap. 4) I paid $250 for the same service, however, my hard drive died and they needed to kludge another controller board on it to get the data off. That is something that I couldn't do so I really didn't have much choice. $70 seems reasonable since the data transfer can be a PITA (I'd bet the place I went to attached both drives to a G3 and did it that way). BTW, the drives are cheap, I paid $138 for an IBM 60GB. Here's another option, you can get a 60GB Firewire HD (from the place with the link above) for $210. Which is about the same price as a drive plus the install... might be an option to consider since you can then move the drive to any other Firewire computer and use it as a backup for your other drives.
Also, consider partitioning your new hard disk, for data integrity, to keep file fragmentation to a minimum, allow multiple OS boot, etc. I set aside a 20GB partition just for editing video files. As an aside, it seems I lost over 3GB (4 if the 61GB sticker on the drive is right) after Mac formatting/partitioning, is that normal? ~ta P.S. Still looking for Linux/Mac sites, I plan to be inside most of this weekend. :( > From: kochkodin <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > > Greetings, > I have a multi-part question for the list... > 1) I have an iMac SE 400 (graphite) w/13gb hd &1 gig ram and a Pismo > 400 w/12gb hd and 1 gig ram. > 2) I would like to upgrade these hd's to at least 60gb due to the fact > that I have at least 50 hrs of home video on vhs that I absolutely > MUST transfer to cd. > 3) Does anyone on the list have experience with the Dazzle Hollywood > Bridge that supposedly allows the transfer from analog to digital?
