>Please post details of how you did it! (Not to thwart your potential sales >or anything, but because I for one would find it very interesting!)
Since I'm not worried about making money off these (I am only offering since there may be people out there that want one, but are not comfortable around a soldering iron) I just ran down to RatShack (er.. Radio Shack), and picked up a 6 foot S-Video cable (pn#15-1510). And a pair of momentary SPST switches (pn#(275-1556). I cut the S-Video cable in half (now I can make two!), stripped the ends. The white pair in the cable go to pins 2 and 4 (white shield to 2, white center to 4). Strip down the red as well, so that you can cut the shield back a little from the center (you wouldn't want to accidentally short pins 1 and 3). Slip a bit of heat shrink tube over the cable. Solder the two white cables to the connectors on the switch (use a small piece of heat shrink tube or electrical tape on one of the switch posts to keep the two from shorting accidentally). Slide the heat shrink tube up over the end of the switch. Shrink the tube for a nice clean end. Plug into the ADB port... press the button... Mac boots! On newer versions of the OS, if you press the button while the Mac is booted, you should get the "Are you sure you want to shut down your computer now" dialog. Of course, with no keyboard attached, you have no way of choosing Shut Down (but if this is a headless machine, you may have already installed something like OkeyDokey that will choose the default button which is Shut Down). I can't test this right now, as the LC520 I just made the cable for is running 7.5.5, and when I press and hold the switch while the Mac is booted, nothing happens (I think that dialog was added in 7.6 or 8.0). I looked into parts cost to build more of these (buying a gold plated S-Video cable from Radio Shack is a bad idea for building many of these... I only did that as a one off so I didn't have to wait a week for parts to arrive). I can build them for $10 each including USPS shipping in the US. Most of that is tied up in labor (have you ever tried to solder a mini-din connector... they are a pain). If anyone wants to build their own... follow the above directions, if you want me to build you one, contact me off list. -chris <http://www.mythtech.net> -- MacNetwork is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
