Ah! I can access web sharing now from outside my network. I am a happy camper. Thanks to all for the tips!
My set up and what I had to do: I have Qwest DSL service using a external DSL modem from Cisco called a 575. Using a cross over cable I connected it to my Linksys DSL Router. From the router I have Macs and PCs, with one Mac (a Permorma 575) running Mac OS 8.1 and Web Sharing enabled. Thanks to some *great* email from David Nelson (Thanks David!!!) I was able to set up my Linksys. The short story to the Links issue is that you make it map web requests to port 80 and point them to a IP address that the Linksys is sending out (in this case, to my Performa running Web Sharing). But, alias, nothing worked. :-( I could get to my web pages on the Mac from *inside* the network by typing in the IP address that the Linksys tossed at it. But when I went *outside* my network and typed in the dynamic IP address, it went nowhere. The problem was setting up the Cisco 675 modem. At first I thought I had broken the Cisco when I did a Code Red work around on it. Part of that work around was to disable "web" stuff and disable port 80. As it turns out, the "web" stuff in the Cisco modem is a interface that lets you use a web browser to access the modem and set it up. That is all it is. It has nothing to do with running a web server behind it. Once I figured that out (Da!), it looked like maybe it was a NAT issue. I don't know NAT from Shine-Ola, but I read this page put up by a Qwest user: http://www.users.qwest.net/~rlutton/ADSL/ It looked like NAT was my problem. To solve it I first had to turn off web access to the Cisco (which I had turned on). Then I used this command to set up NAT correctly: set nat entry add 10.0.0.2 80 tcp As I understand that command, it routes dynamic web requests (Cisco calls the outside world's dyanmic IP address the "Global address" or "Global IP") to 10.0.0.2 on port 80. The 10.0.0.2 is the address that is tossed to my Linksys. So now, I can find my dynamic IP address, type it into any browser from outside my network, and I can land my web pages. I am happy it is working. It sure took a *long time* to get this far!! Thanks to all for the help. jack in portland oregon -- MacNetwork is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
