or is there an aui or aaui connector besides the bnc?  sometimes there's
a switch to select which one.  there are also "token ring" cards that
look just like ethernet cards, and some ethernet cards with a switch to
select "cam" networking, which is used in factory automation and is
similiar to ethernet.  i wouldn't expect an ethernet card to crash the
network just because the driver isn't installed, it shouldn't do that. 
which ethernet cards are you trying to use?
